To rotate the pieces hold down the “R” key and click the left mouse button over the piece you want to rotate

To lessen the chance of losing a piece make sure that the piece that you want to rotate has been clicked before rotating with the R key. So click the piece with the mouse to select it, then press the R key and the mouse button again to rotate. This should keep you from losing pieces.
